AbstractThe collective living quarters, referred to as Khu tập thể in Vietnamese, a familiar phrase used by Hanoians, is connected with periods of subsidy and is an unforgettable memory that is part of the lives of many families, who were officers and civil servants working in the State sector. Thanh Cong quarter is one of the most prominent areas in Hanoi with upgraded design, constructions, and landscape compared to other collective living quarters in the city. It is seen as a completed living area offering a fully functioning lifestyle for its community. Thanh Cong quarter underwent a lot of changes under the transition to a socialist oriented economy in Vietnam in the late 1980s. The original design of the collective living quarters was not suitable for private businesses, which led to the encroachment on public spaces. As a result, the quarter could not avoid impacts on the appearances and daily routines of residents. Step-by-step changes were a common phenomenon within all collective living quarters from this period.Received 15th June 2024; Revised 5th September 2024; Accepted 5th October 2024KeywordsThanh Cong Quarters; Collective Living Quarter; Public Spaces; Subsidy; Encroachment.

Abstract

From the moment of birth, an individual exists as a biological entity. However, true integration into human society necessitates the acquisition of cultural norms, values, knowledge, and beliefs specific to their given community. This process involves adapting to social roles and cultural practices, ultimately enabling effective communication and fulfillment of societal responsibilities. Notably, language assumes a pivotal role in this intricate web of socialization and stands as arguably the most influential factor in the overall process. To delve into the current state of socialization among children from Vietnamese-Korean multicultural families residing in Vietnam and attending a Korean International School, this research employs socialization theory, descriptive statistical methods via questionnaires, and interdisciplinary research techniques.

Abstract

This study examines the present status and srategies to improve the quality of Vietnamese academic publications in the fields of social sciences and humanities. The study utilizes a descriptive qualitative design, sourcing data from a recent journal list of Vietnam State Professorships and the ISI/Scopus database while contrasting it with recent developments in regional academic journals across Southeast AsiaThis raises concerns regarding the scholarly publication, including traditional publishing methods, the quality of peer review, and issues relating publication formatting. I propose some solutions to address these problems, facilitating their entry into the international arena for social sciences and humanities. The proposed solutions encompass editorial management, targeting niche publications, publishing exclusively in English, adopting digitalization, and improving editorial awareness.

The comparative study of bilingualism in East (Taiwan) and Southeast Asia (Vietnam) includes two interrelated investigations. This study provides valuable insights into the processes of language and literacy development among children from minority groups and examine patterns of language acquisition within school-age populations in bilingual communities. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of how bilingualism affects educational outcomes in these distinct cultural and linguistic contexts. Study A involved in-depth interviews with 62 Vietnamese immigrant participants and aimed to explore their language learning experiences and related issues of adaptation to Taiwanese culture. Study B, which was located in the Thái-speaking district of Bá Thước in Thanh Hóa province, involved fieldwork that primarily focused on the development of bilingual children in first grade. In the Chinese-speaking community of Taiwan, evidence suggests that immigrant parents make significant progress in the second language learning of Chinese. In turn, first generation children appear to be making progress that is parallel to that of their Chinese native-speaking peers. Similarly, in the Thái-speaking communities, progress in mastering the national language, Vietnamese, as a second language is comparable to that in Vietnamese-speaking communities (Kinh monolingual children).
